Sri Lanka

Tuk-Tuk Adventures

Horns blaring, buses looming and a tuk tuk engine rattling beneath us. The nerves kicked in as we landed at Colombo Airport… we were really going to drive a tuk tuk around Sri Lanka. Our only experience of traffic here had been seen on TV and that didn’t instil heaps of confidence.

Anyway, we picked up our trusty tuk, our transport for the next two months and got stuck into one of the best overlanding adventures we’ve done to date! Weaving in and out of traffic, narrowly missing buses and feeling the humid air rush past, there’s no better way to explore Sri Lanka.

Driving ourselves and overlanding Sri Lanka gave us an insight to the country that’s often missed. Local families welcomed us into their tiny villages, we stayed in remote places and we saw both the tourist side of the island as well as the daily struggle that’s so many people’s reality.

Here’s our overlanding tuktuk adventure… and if you only take one thing away from this, please hire a tuk tuk and experience this culture for yourself.

With a top speed of 45km/hr on the Sri Lankan Roads our little tuk was not fast, having to stop every two hours for it to cool down you’d think this isn’t a go to overland vehicle. However, that’s the beauty of this little vehicle.
