Galle Dutch Fort is unlike anywhere else in Sri Lanka, a coastal town where narrow, cobbled streets weave between whitewashed colonial buildings, echoing a rich historical past. Far from the typical dusty roads of the island’s rural towns, Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage site, offers a unique blend of history, charm, and character. Wander through its boutique-lined alleys, uncover centuries-old architecture, and discover hidden treasures around every corner.
Home to the iconic Galle Dutch Fort, the picturesque Galle Lighthouse, and popular cricket stadium, Galle has become a must-visit destination on Sri Lanka’s southern coast. With its deep history, blend of Dutch, Portuguese and British influences, and growing café culture, it draws in hundreds of visitors every day.
We delve into Galle, sharing the best Galle restaurants, places to stay and top things to do alongside our personal experiences from weird (getting an unexpected foot massage) to romantic (taking a stroll along palm-lined boulevards).
Here’s everything you need to plan your perfect trip to Galle, Sri Lanka.

Best Time To Visit Galle Fort
The peak season in Galle unsurprisingly coincides with the dry season which runs from December to March, when the weather is sunny and ideal for exploring the fort and coastline. However, don’t let that stop you from visiting in the shoulder seasons because as mentioned above Galle is a tourist hotspot meaning it gets busy! Visiting in November or April will help you avoid some of the crowds.
We visited in November and experienced just one short shower. We recommend checking the weather forecast before your day trip, as Galle's charm comes from perusing quaint shops and walking the Dutch-built ramparts.
Galle also hosts special events such as the Galle Literary Festival, which attracts writers and creatives from around the world. Definitely worth checking out if your travel dates align.

How To Get To Galle, Sri Lanka
Getting to Galle is easy thanks to its location just a couple of hours south of Colombo. One of the most popular ways to travel is by train, with a scenic route that hugs the coastline and gives you a front-row seat to palm trees, beaches, and village life. Trains cost approximately 300-500 LKR ($1-2 USD) for second class.
If you're feeling adventurous (and don't mind a little chaos), the local buses are even cheaper and run frequently between major cities and Galle. Just prepare for a noisy, fast-paced ride!
Or, if you’re after more freedom, consider renting a tuktuk and making the journey yourself. It’s a unique way to see the country and our favourite way to travel! Use our code KANDM for 5% off tuktukrental.com.
When visiting we parked our tuktuk here at Fort Car Park. We paid £1 for parking which included someone watching our luggage and strangely a foot massage as we were trying to leave. One of the most uncomfortable travel moments we’ve had as he wouldn’t let go of my foot!

Day Visit To Galle Dutch Fort
Lots of people, us included, choose to do a flying visit to Galle Fort and just spend one day uncovering the deep historical roots and spending too many rupees in the enticing cafes and shops. If you choose to do this we recommend a Galle Walking tour to learn about the history of the area.
We also popped into Galle City, a whirlwind away from Galle Fort. Honking, traffic driving the wrong way and local life is showcased and unless you need something important (like a new laptop charger) best missed.
