Trincomalee offers some of the best snorkelling in Sri Lanka, and no place is better than Pigeon Island, located off the northeast coast. This small rocky outcrop known as Pigeon Island is home to rich coral reefs and marine life, making it the perfect day trip destination.
Pigeon Island is one of the top attractions in Trincomalee, home to over 100 species of coral and 300 types of tropical fish. It is the best snorkelling spot we found in Sri Lanka and one not to be missed off your itinerary.
Whether you're in Trincomalee or planning to visit, this guide covers everything you need to know about visiting Pigeon Island National Park.

Where Is Pigeon Island, Sri Lanka?
Trincomalee is an emerging tourist destination in northeast Sri Lanka, known for its pristine beaches and excellent diving conditions. If you're staying in Nilaveli or Uppuveli like we did, then Pigeon Island is hard to miss, sitting just one kilometer off the coast.
This small rocky outcrop rises from the sea, protecting the coral reefs below that now form part of Pigeon Island National Park, one of Sri Lanka's newest marine conservation areas.

How To Get To Pigeon Island, Trincomalee?
Pigeon Island is easily accessible from Trincomalee's main beach areas, with the island sitting just 1km offshore from both Uppuveli and Nilaveli.
Getting there is part of the fun as you can only reach Pigeon Island through organised boat tours that depart from either Nilaveli Beach or Uppuveli Beach. Several options are available for booking:
Beachfront snorkelling shops - Many offer tour packages and equipment rental
Your accommodation - Hotels and guesthouses can often arrange trips
Local boat operators - Direct booking with fishermen who run tours
Tours typically include boat transport, snorkelling equipment, and a guide. It's worth comparing prices and what's included, as some operators offer lunch or additional stops at nearby attractions.

Why Is It Called Pigeon Island?
The island gets its name from the hundreds of Blue Rock Pigeons that nest and breed here each year. These birds are an endangered species, and their protection is one of the key conservation goals of Pigeon Island National Park.
What To Expect At Pigeon Island
Your boat tour will be a round trip to the island and should include the snorkelling equipment you need, though this depends on whether you choose a snorkelling or diving package.
The boat journey takes around 15-20 minutes to reach Pigeon Island National Park, where you'll disembark onto a small sandy beach area. From here, you can snorkel in designated areas next to the boats, staying within a safe zone marked by ropes. This system helps protect the coral reefs while they continue their recovery process.
Standard snorkelling etiquette applies: don't touch marine life (including turtles), avoid stepping on coral, and respect the protected environment you're visiting.
About the coral reefs: While the 2004 tsunami caused significant damage to the coral systems, the reefs are steadily recovering under the protection of the national park. Despite this ongoing recovery, visitors consistently report it as one of Sri Lanka's best snorkelling destinations.

Snorkelling vs Diving at Pigeon Island
Pigeon Island offers excellent opportunities for both snorkelling and scuba diving, with different areas of the reef catering to each activity.
Snorkelling focuses on the shallow reef areas on the south side of the island, where the water is typically 3-6 meters deep. This is where you're most likely to spot sea turtles, blacktip reef sharks, and a variety of colorful tropical fish. The shallow depth means excellent natural light for photography and comfortable conditions for beginners.
Scuba diving takes place on the north side of the island where the water is deeper and the coral formations are more extensive. While the deeper reefs are more vibrant with better coral coverage, marine life sightings like turtles and sharks are less predictable than in the shallow snorkelling areas.

Other Snorkelling in Trincomalee
We understand why the price is so high for Pigeon National Park and hope the money goes back into conservation. If you’re on a backpackers budget then we recommend checking out Navy Island and Swami Rock which are outside the National Park and therefore cheaper to visit as you will only have to pay for the boat and equipment, halving the cost.
Although swimming with whales is illegal in Sri Lanka, you can observe blue whales and fin whales from a respectful distance during the season (April to September) on organised whale watching tours. These tours typically depart from Trincomalee harbor and offer a chance to see some of the world's largest marine mammals in their natural habitat.
