Sigiriya is on everyone’s list when travelling to Sri Lanka, meaning there’s no shortage of accommodation, including budget homestays and luxury resorts. In fact, some of the best places to stay in Sri Lanka are luxury 5 star hotels in Sigiriya.

What makes Sigiriya so irresistible to travellers is Lion’s Rock, an ancient fortress built upon an iconic, towering rock that protrudes unnaturally from the ground, and Pidurangala, a sister rock with views of Lion’s Rock, as well as wild elephants roaming the surrounding area.

Given these must-see attractions, the best area to stay in Sigiriya is directly south of Lion’s Rock, where there is a row of restaurants and shops that form the heart of the town and are close to the iconic attractions.

If you’re looking for 5 star hotels in Sigiriya, they are usually nestled amongst the lush jungle and therefore a little further out, but they offer bicycle hire or shuttle services, plus many have their own fine dining on-site.

Of course, budget plays a major role too, so this blog shares all different kinds of accommodation in Sigiriya, from 5 star resorts to budget-friendly guest houses and Sigiriya hostels perfect for backpackers.

Read on to explore the best places to stay in Sigiriya, from the renowned Aliya Resort to the popular Sigiriya Kingdom Resort and budget-friendly Tree House Hostel Sigiriya.

Best Sigiriya Tours

Luckily, Sigiriya is in the ‘dry zone’ meaning it’s less affected by the monsoons and has a steady climate of 23-30°C. The best time to visit Sigiriya is between January and April. These months receive minimal rainfall making it perfect for hiking.

  1. Do not ride the elephants, unfortunately we saw two young kids on an elephant riding experience. These are unethical and we advise you not to do this!

  2. Hire a tuktuk! We found our tuktuk was the best way to get around, giving us freedom to see what we liked, when we liked!

  3. If you’re on a budget skip Lion’s rick and climb Pidurangala instead.

  4. Don’t miss out on other attractions nearby such as the Dambulla Cave Temple and Rose Quartz Mountains.
