At 4:30am, our tuktuk spluttered to life, headlights slicing through the darkness as we crept through winding backstreets deep in elephant country. With every bump, our lights flickered shrouding us in darkness before glimmering back on and guiding us toward the shadowy silhouette of Pidurangala Rock.
This early morning adventure turned out to be one of the best attractions we did while travelling in Sri Lanka, and we think you should do it too!
Pidurangala Rock, Sigiriya is a must visit destination in Sri Lanka. A budget-friendly alternative to Lion’s Rock and incredible sunrise or sunset location. From the top of the 199m climb you are rewarded with sweeping views over dense greenery and an iconic view of Lion’s Rock (Sigiriya Rock).

Best Time to Visit Pidurangala Rock - Sunrise vs Sunset
The best time to visit Pidurangala Rock is either at sunrise or sunset, as both offer breathtaking views. However, we highly recommend going for sunrise. Not only will you avoid climbing down in the dark, but you'll also experience the magical moment the landscape is revealed with the first light of day.

Our Experience Of Pidurangala
Pidurangala Rock Hike Guide & Our Experience Of Pidurangala Rock
We parked our tuktuk up in the car park on the right (for free), crossed the road and climbed the first of many steps up to the ticket office to pay 1000 LKR each.
There are signs here reminding you to cover your shoulders and knees as you pass through the temple at the bottom, we recommend you bring your own long clothing, however if you forget you can rent a sarong.
Having arrived at 5am we thought we might be alone but we were still joined by a handful of other people also wanting to get the best spot for the sunrise.

We started the climb, which is easy to follow at the beginning. Our head torches creating a narrow path of light as we scrambled up the steps. Even in the cool of dawn our backs began to sweat and heart rates quicken.
When we reached the reclining Buddha the beginnings of sun rays appeared on the horizon and we pressed on eager to make it to the top.
The path narrows into a scramble through large boulders, signposted by spray paint that can be tricky to find.
As we pulled ourselves through the boulders to a ledge with a dark drop-off, we saw a snake. After a closer inspection, it was actually a snake skin but this served as a reminder of the animals that roamed and owned the area.
After the final climb we emerged on the top of Pidurangala. The hazy rays of morning sunshine barely lit up the view as we settled ourselves down waiting for the morning to break.
We didn’t have to wait long before the sun poked itself out over the horizon and illuminated the nearby Lion’s Rock, cute stray puppies and resident toque macaques who were ready to cause a nuisance.
We spent 30 minutes exploring the top of Pidurangala, admiring the views and capturing the moments before heading back down.
As we made our way back down, this time with the help of daylight, the boulders seemed less daunting and the path easier to follow. With the sun now high and the forest alive with sound, we took one last look back at the summit, grateful we’d made the early start.
If you’re visiting Sigiriya, hiking Pidurangala for sunrise is an absolute must. It’s the perfect adventure and one of the best views in Sri Lanka.
Pidurangala Cave Temple
Close to the top you will pass by the Pidurangala Cave Temple, a reclining Buddha, one of the only structures that remain from the ancient monastery that once stood here. Pidurangala means ‘offered piles of gold’ and was once an important place for Buddhists dating back to before the first century.
The Buddha is almost impossible to miss and an impressive statue that will welcome the sunrise due to its east facing position.

Do not ride the elephants, unfortunately we saw two young kids on an elephant riding experience. These are unethical and we advise you not to do this!
Hire a tuktuk! We found our tuktuk was the best way to get around, giving us freedom to see what we liked, when we liked!
If you’re on a budget skip Lion’s rick and climb Pidurangala instead.
Don’t miss out on other attractions nearby such as the Dambulla Cave Temple and Rose Quartz Mountains.

Final Thoughts on Pidurangala Rock Sri Lanka
Located close to the heart of Sigiriya, around a 10 minute drive, Pidurangala has grown in popularity with tourists due to the high price tag of climbing the once more popular Lion’s Rock. Of course Lion’s Rock has a UNESCO World Heritage fortress as its summit, but if you’re ‘templed out’ or on a budget we actually preferred Pidurangala, as we got views of the iconic shaped rock.
The climb becomes a scramble before you’re welcomed with panoramic views from the top and an epic sunrise. This is a Sri Lankan hike we will remember and one of our favourite mornings we had in Sri Lanka.
