A popular tourist destination on the south coast of Sri Lanka. Particularly popular with Russian holidaymakers, in fact the tour guides now learn Russian, it is also a backpacker hotspot as it is one of the most accessible places to see turtles in Sri Lanka.

The draw of Sri Lankan sea turtles, golden sand beaches and laid-back holiday atmosphere puts this little town on the map and became one of our last stops on our 2-month trip around Sri Lanka.

With the small town being a tourist hotspot there is no shortage of Hikkaduwa hotels. You can find lots of places to stay in Hikkaduwa including large hotel complexes with pools, luxury boutique hotels with spas or more modest homestays and hostels perfect if you’re on a budget. Visiting in the dry season, Dec-Mar may increase some hotel prices but overall this is an incredibly affordable destination.

The town is centered around one main street Galle Road, which is also the main tourist area with restaurants, bars and shops. This is the best place to look for accommodation in our opinion. If you want a quieter stay then Narigama Beach will provide that plus another popular area a little outside Hikkaduwa is Roman Beach.

Narigama Beach is about a 10-minute walk south of the main Hikkaduwa Beach area, offering a less crowded shoreline while still being accessible to the town's amenities by a short tuk-tuk ride. Roman Beach, located about 2km north of the town center, provides a truly serene experience with fewer facilities but more privacy and natural beauty.

If you’re visiting Sri Lanka here are our top travel tips for Hikkaduwa:

  1. Rent a Tuk Tuk as Transport  - This made our trip! Not only did we have complete freedom and flexibility it allowed us to have authentic relationships with locals. Use our code "KandM" for 5% off Tuktuk Rental

  2. Respect the wildlife -  Don’t touch the turtles, even if they swim right up to you. Admire them from a distance to avoid causing stress or damage to their delicate shells.

  3. Support local eateries - Try the local food in the smaller restaurants, it’s normally cheaper and more delicious

  4. Travel in the dry season - Sudden monsoon rains can cause flooding and pollute the ocean. Plan your trip from November to April for the best beach conditions and clearer water.
