Looking for the best hotels in Tangalle Sri Lanka?  A small town on the south coast of Sri Lanka famous for its wild turtles and rugged beaches, Tangalle was also one of the quietest places we visited which made it feel like we were uncovering some of Sri Lanka’s unknown tourist spots.

During our time in Tangalle we managed to hop along the coastline exploring the hidden beaches, wild attractions such as the Hummanaya Blow Hole and found ourselves winding through the narrow streets of Tangalle town to find the best area to stay in Tangalle.

Although Tangalle is less visited than other popular south coast destinations, we recommend adding it to your itinerary if you like quiet beaches all to yourself, authentic local interactions, especially in the main Tangalle city and wildlife watching as Rekawa Beach, famous for sea turtles is nearby as is the popular Yala National Park.

The most popular area to stay is near Tangalle beach, where you can find a strip of restaurants catered to tourists. There are plenty of budget homestays in this area, other areas with excellent hotels include Unakuruwa and Silent Beach, these offer more luxury resorts tucked away in lush jungle that backs onto the beach.

Tangalle Travel Tips

  1. Stay near the beach rather than in the main town which is pretty hectic!

  2. Time your visit for turtle season - the best time to see turtles at Rekawa Beach is between April and July.

  3. Bring cash - There are ATMs in Tangalle but most guesthouses, tuk-tuks and restaurants only accept cash.

  4. Be careful of the ocean currents - The beaches here are beautiful but have strong currents and waves, the best swimming can be found at Goyambokka Beach or Silent Beach
