Choosing a new suitcase is not an easy task so we’ve teamed up with Level8 to review two of their most popular models: the Hegent Carry-On and the Gibraltar Aluminium.

If you haven’t heard of Level8, they are a contemporary luggage brand based in New York that lean into the luxury side of travel with minimalist, durable designs. Blending functionality with travelling in style is something that we’re not quite used to, I type this as I’m glancing over at our old, battered backpacks.

So let's dive into our Level8 luggage review. We’ve been using the cases for over a month now and we'll give you our honest take on two cases at different price points, cover the standout features and accessories, and tackle the big question: is this the next best luxury luggage on the market?

Who Are Level8?

Level8 are based in New York. Founded in 2008 they aim to create sleek, luxury luggage for modern travellers without compromising on functionality, which as you’ll see below in our review, we feel it does very well.

In terms of pricing, Level8 is in the mid to premium market with cases ranging from £160 - £1000+, this price tag is reflected in the quality of materials used.

Something that we are trying to do is invest in higher-quality products that in turn help with sustainability. We love that Level8 integrates eco-conscious practices into some of their designs, notably the Adventurer uses an eco-friendly liner. We also appreciated how the cases came in cardboard packaging with minimal plastic wrapping.

Level8 kindly reached out asking us to review their products and this couldn’t have come at a better time. A slightly traumatic incident occurred when my previous suitcase (a rather cheap Amazon buy) split open in central London during torrential rain. Mortified, I swept up my underwear but in my haste I lost a shoe…sadly, this isn’t the only luggage mishap I've had but I'll spare you any more second-hand embarrassment!

Level 8 Hegent Carry-on Review

The first thing we noticed about the Hegent Suitcase was how good it looked! We opted for the navy and it was super smart, perfect for a business case!

Crafted with a durable polycarbonate shell, the Hegent features a zipperless design secured by a TSA-approved latch system. Not having zips will hopefully save any more lost items from faulty fastenings, plus it’s super quick to grab something out of your case whether you’re on a plane or a train.

The suitcase comes with ultra-quiet 360° spinner wheels - something Mike truly appreciates after once having to haul what might just be the loudest suitcase in existence and a four-stage telescopic handle, meaning it’s great for travellers both tall and small.

Inside, it offers a well-organised compartment with a compression system to maximise packing efficiency.

There are, however, a couple of downsides to the Hegent that we’ve identified. If you often travel with EU and UK budget airlines like Ryanair then this case is too big for carry-on (by 3cms) and would need to be checked in, which is such a shame. We also think the case is a little on the heavy side but we understand this is due to its quality and robust frame.

This is the perfect case to use for city breaks and UK trips, for us this is the perfect bag for our frequent trips to London - we’ve already used it a handful of times and love it.

Level8 Gibraltar Suitcase Review

If you’re looking for something even more luxury, think Rimowa dupe, then the Gibraltar Aluminium case could be exactly what you’re looking for.

Made from aerospace-grade aluminium-magnesium alloy, it boasts a hard-shell exterior that screams high-end travel.

The suitcase shares key features with the Hegent including dual TSA-approved locks, ultra-quiet 360° spinner wheels, and a mesh pocket interior divider for organised packing. Plus, it also comes with a set of four packing cubes and a luggage tag worth £89.98. As packing cube fanatics, we love that these come with interchangeable labels and a durable zip… as we often over stuff ours.

The only downside we can see with the Gibraltar, is that it is a smidge too big for Ryanair carry-on even though it's smaller than the Hegent.

Size and Airline Compatibility

Hegent Carry-On: 53.8 x 36.6 x 22.8 cm

Gibraltar Aluminium: 55.8 x 38.1 x 21.3 cm

These bags work as cabin luggage for most major airlines like easyJet and British Airways, but they're just too big for Ryanair (missing by less than 1cm) and other ultra-budget carriers with stricter size limits, which is something to keep in mind.

Our Honest Level8 Luggage Review

After using both Level8 suitcases for over a month, we’ve started to figure out who they’re best suited for.

The Gibraltar Aluminium is perfect for someone who wants to have a good looking case with functionality, the wheels glide quietly and the locks are smooth and secure.

The Hegent is perhaps better value for money, you get a similar case for half the price. You still get the quiet wheels, zipperless latch system and thoughtfully designed interior.

Personally, we’d choose one of each. Mike likes the Hegent, preferring the more minimal latch system and colour whereas I prefer the sleek aluminium style of the Gibraltar.

The only real consideration is the weight. Both Level8 cases are on the heavier side, which leaves less allowance for packing when travelling carry-on only. After a month of use, we’ve had no issues besides a few light scratches, but that’s to be expected with any suitcase.

Level8 Accessories Review

Level8 offers a range of accessories to complement their suitcases; we were lucky enough to try out their Element Toiletry Case and Premium Packing Cubes.

We're super grateful to have also tried out the Level8 Element Wash Bag, and it's proven to be quite the Tardis!

The wash bag features a durable water-resistant exterior with Level8's signature minimalist design that pairs perfectly with their luggage. Inside, you'll find two compartments: a mesh section for dry products and a waterproof area for anything that might leak. The material wipes clean easily, which has already come in handy after a minor toothpaste incident.

For us, this wash bag is roomy enough for everything we need, though we are slightly minimalist. Some people may need more space, but there’s also a small zip pocket on the outside, and we actually managed to fit more in than we first thought.

At £59.99, you’re investing in the quality of the product. It's perfect for travellers who prioritise organisation and durability over having loads of compartments - sometimes simple is exactly what you need.

The Gibraltar suitcase comes with the Level8 Packing Cubes and as mentioned above we are both full on board with this packing trend. They are useful in every occasion and one thing Level8 has done well is to incorporate velcro tags so you can label and identify what is inside each cube.

The set comes with four different sizes including one big enough for jeans and jackets. These cubes are the perfect game of Tetris inside the Gibraltar case fitting neatly to display the best packed suitcase we’ve ever seen.

So far they feel well-made, but we'll report back on how the zips hold up to our notorious overstuffing habits.

Would it be wrong to say this is our favourite accessory? It may be small but not only does it offer a practical solution to the nightmare of missing luggage, it also means we can stop tying random bits of frayed ribbon to our bags.

The tag has a leather-look with a buckle fastening meaning it can’t accidentally fall off. With a choice of colours, this is the perfect addition to any bag, and remember, the Gibraltar comes with one!

Comparing Level8 with Other Brands

Level8 Luggage vs Samsonite

Known for its durable and affordable luggage options, Samsonite offers a range of suitcases suitable for various travel needs. However, Level8's focus on minimalist design and premium materials sets it apart.

The key differences lie in design: where Samsonite prioritises practicality and value, Level8 leans into luxury aesthetics. The use of latches over zippers and the sleek exterior design give Level8 cases a more premium appearance, especially the aluminum Gibraltar, which we just love the elegant style and feeling of opulence.

In terms of durability, both brands build high-quality products, but Level8's materials - particularly the aerospace-grade aluminum - feels more substantial than comparable Samsonite models.

Level8 vs Rimowa

This is where Level8 really shines as an alternative. Rimowa is a pioneer in luxury luggage and is often seen as the best, however it’s not affordable to most. Level8's Gibraltar at £459.99 delivers a remarkably similar aesthetic and build quality for significantly less money. The Gibraltar certainly channels that same premium aluminum look and feel that made Rimowa famous.

Level8 Luggage vs Osprey

Renowned for its outdoor and adventure gear, Osprey's luggage options, like the Transporter Wheeled carry-on, are designed for rugged use. While durable, they may lack the sleek design and premium materials found in Level8's offerings.

If you’re a backpacker, nothing will stop us recommending the Osprey Farpoint and Fairview but they’re not great for short city breaks or business trips… that’s where Level8 shines. It’s all about matching your luggage to your trip and if you’re heading to a spa we know what case we’d take.

Final Thoughts: Which Suitcase Should You Choose?

After using the Level8 suitcases, it’s clear they are durable cases but which one should you  choose?

If you want sleek, luxury aesthetics and don’t mind spending a bit more, the Gibraltar Aluminium stands out. This is perfect for a business trip with included packing cubes and a smart luggage tag. This would be our pick for business trips, city breaks and a premium feel.

On the other hand, the Hegent carry-on case offers value for money. With similar features to the Gibraltar, it stands out showcasing Level8’s best features such as the 360 spinner wheels and zipperless design while being more affordable. This would be our choice for a reliable, everyday case. Overall, both are great options for a modern, high quality case, just watch out for size and weight limits of certain airlines!
