Melanting Waterfall Munduk, Bali: A Tough Trek To Paradise

Hidden down 500 steps you’ll find one of Munduk’s most powerful waterfalls, Melanting, locally known as air terjun Melanting. A quieter waterfall due to the long trek down to the falls, but of course this means you may have the site all to yourself like we did when we visited.

A stunning 20m drop ends in a dramatic pool at the bottom where you can enjoy the cooling spray. Also, you can get different perspectives of the waterfall due to two foot bridges on the site, spot Mike in the photo below which shows the true scale of Melanting Waterfall.

Where Is Melanting Waterfall?

Nestled in the valleys surrounding our favourite Balinese town of Munduk you can find some of the best tropical waterfalls in the world, including Melanting. The falls can be found on the four waterfalls trek, which is well signposted and a great day out.

How To Get To Melanting Waterfall?

We started the trek to the waterfall from Melanting Cottages. Follow the path and go past Belong Waterfall, you should come to a split. Head left, the split was well sign posted, carry on until you reach the ticket booth for Melanting, around ten minutes away down a steep slope just past Labuan Kebo Waterfall.

You can also start the walk from Warung Taman Aya. Head towards Warung Arta Cooking Class and continue until a split, take the right path and continue across a bamboo bridge to a small waterfall, this is not Melanting. Head upwards for a further ten minutes where you’ll see a sign pointing left for Melanting, this will take you to the ticket booth.

Air Terjun Melanting Description

From the top of the steep staircase you can hear the rush of Melanting Falls. Keep walking down and you’ll reach the ticket booth, tickets cost IDR 20,000. Follow the stairs down and down (and down) until finally you catch a glimpse of the falls. The path is well kept, however during or after heavy rain it could get very muddy and slippery which is why we suggest visiting in the dry season.

The waterfall itself is one of the most powerful we saw in Munduk, making the steps worth it! You can get close to the dramatic spray if you clamber over the rocks but we don’t recommend going for the dip here due to the strength of the water.

Spend some time admiring the surroundings by walking over the foot bridges and taking in the nature that defines Bali, a world away from the overcrowded tourist towns of the south.

Once you’ve finished we recommend heading to the other waterfalls in the area.

Technically a Five Waterfalls Walk, we highly recommend doing the Munduk Waterfalls Trek if you’re up for a challenge. As well as visiting Melanting Waterfall, it also includes the following, all along the same route:

How Much Is The Entrance Fee For Melanting Waterfall?

When we visited we paid IDR 20,000 each

What Is At Melanting Waterfall?

At the bottom of the falls trek there are no facilities, however next to the ticket booth there is a small toilet, and further up the path you can find restaurants to grab lunch or a snack. We stopped at The Melanting Food Drink & View for a nasi goreng.

Final Thoughts on Melanting Waterfall

A waterfall that seems out of the way and with 500 steps you might consider skipping it, however this also means this was the quietest waterfall we visited during the four waterfalls walk and it was one of the most impressive.

Melanting is powerful and the spray can be felt from the rocky section to the left, this is also the best place to snap a photo of the dramatic 20m jungle falls. Don't leave this natural beauty off your four waterfalls walk!
