Every eager adrenaline looking tourist hears whispers of biking Death Road in Bolivia, but what if we told you there’s something better out there, something bound to get your heart racing and test your limits.
My bike is perched at the top of an incredibly steep decline and I have to force myself to tip the front wheel over the edge. In seconds my forearms are tensed and eyes focused on the path before me… this is extreme biking in one of the most spectacular mountain settings.

La Paz for us turned out to be the adventure capital of South America, paragliding in the shadow of mountains, hiking up to 6000m to reach the peak of Huayna Potosi and now the thrilling ride of mountain biking downhill through the Andean Landscapes.
These alternative adventures are only possible due to AndesXtremo, the best adventure tourism business in La Paz and who showed us these adrenaline filled tracks that are off the usual tourist trail.
Here’s our experience of mountain biking in La Paz, and why this is one of the best things to do in Bolivia.
Mountain Biking in La Paz
La Paz is home to some of the best mountain biking in South America. From the famous Death Road to more hidden trials. We decided to drive Death Road, and after seeing the hundreds of bikers each day we decided it wasn’t for us and decided to seek out something else…
Some of the trails run by AndesXtremo are exactly what it says in the name, EXTREME! They’re technical downhill rides best left to those with experience seeking out a thrill. But don’t worry as Miguel our guide knows exactly where to take us to push our limits but keep us safe.

Warming Up: Biking At Valle de Luna
Before we headed off to the top of the mountain we went to Valle de Luna, a surreal landscape with a couple of paths to test out the bikes and get comfortable riding, plus your guide can see your level and choose the best track for your skill.
We’re confident on bikes but have virtually no downhilling experience, mix that with the brakes being the opposite to the UK we had a few falls (over the handle bars), all part of the fun though and shows why it’s vital to have this session before hitting the mountain.
We were also grateful for the safety gear, knee and elbow pads plus a full head helmet!
Mike dusted himself off and we enjoyed weaving through the unique rock formations, practicing some more technical sections and steep downhill rides using the technique we’d just been taught… stand up, hips back and use both brakes, 70% back and 30% front.
That’s it we were ready for some downhilling!
An Alternative Bike Trail To Death Road
Our guide, Miguel knows the best biking spots around La Paz, having grown up in the area and having a thirst for adrenaline. Therefore, we trusted him when he said he knew trails that were way more interesting and fun than Death Road where you’re joined by hordes of bikers.
After our training we hopped in the car and started the winding journey up the mountain, each hairpin narrower than the last until we reached the top.
Here we secured our helmet and started the ride… all downhill!
We flew past local villages with children playing and cholitas enjoying the evening sun before coming to our first shortcut.
Narrow, rocky and steep and with as much grace as an elephant down we went, the wind rushing past and adrenaline kicking in… This was the proper way to enjoy the mountains.
Each shortcut seemed more daring than the last but our confidence grew and we enjoyed the challenge of doing something new.
By the end we were flying round corners, enjoying the winding road that took us to the bottom of the mountain! With wide smiles and aching wrists we jumped back into the car to La Paz.
Another amazing adrenaline filled day in La Paz!
Comparison To Biking Death Road
There's a few things that stand out when comparing this ride to death road. Although we didn't mountain bike the Yungas Road we did drive it in our Toyota 4Runner meaning we got a feel for it.
The first thing that stood out was the sheer amount of people and tours on the road. You won't be alone during your decent, in fact you'll be with lots of other people. In contrast we were the only three whizzing down the mountain on our tour.
We can't deny the views on the Death Road are spectacular, the heart stopping drop, waterfalls and winding gravel road. However we also had incredible views of Illimani, a 6000m peak famous in La Paz.
Lastly the thrill, our track was more technical, narrower and more rewarding. Pushing our limits and showing us what we're capable of! This was real adventure.

Do You Need To Be An Expert?
An expert? No, but you do need to be confident on a bike. Alongside the warm up where you can get used to riding there is also the option to skip a shortcut and ride down the road... if it looks a little to steep.
Plus, if you're really struggling the trail crosses the road multiple times where you can get back into the car.

As with all adventure sports accidents happen... see Mike here! Therefore we recommend SafetyWing, with worldwide coverage of over 30 activities including Mountain Biking when you choose their adventure sports add-on.
All About the Gear
Self assurance is key when downhilling so being confident in the gear is a must. We were very glad to be supplied with good protection, elbow pads, knee pads, gloves and a full face helmet - Mike definitely needed it on his couple of falls.
Our bikes had good suspension and sharp breaks, which is not always the case in Bolivia.
You shouldn't need to being much, just a water bottle and your phone or GoPro. Don't worry if you don't have a camera however as our guide snapped some footage of us as we went downhill.
Where Is The Best Mountain Biking In La Paz?
Most of the mountain biking trails are outside of the main city of La Paz. Our guide Miguel knows all the best trails from highly technical to a good beginner route.
The company AndesXtremo is located in the city and arranges transport for their tours, making it simple and easy.
Why Choose AndesXtremo Over Death Road
Death Road is iconic. The history is haunting, the scenery is dramatic, and yes… AndesXtremo can take you there. But here's what most tourists don't know: there are trails around La Paz that are more technical, more rewarding, and completely free of the crowds.
That's the whole philosophy behind AndesXtremo. They exist to show visitors a side of Bolivia most never find. One that is beautiful, untouched and local.
For confident bikers especially, Death Road can feel anticlimactic. Hundreds of riders tackle it every single day. AndesXtremo's trails are nothing like that. You test your mindset, push your limits and are rewarded with an incredible ride.

Best Time to Visit La Paz for Mountain Biking
The good news is La Paz is pretty much a year-round destination for mountain biking. The dry season runs from May to October and this is when you'll get the clearest skies, best trail conditions and most reliable weather for a downhill ride.
We visited in April during the shoulder season and the conditions were perfect. Cool enough at altitude to keep you comfortable, dry enough that the trails weren't slippery.
The wet season (November to April) brings afternoon rain which can make some trails more challenging and muddy.
La Paz sits at 3,600m above sea level. Give yourself at least a day to acclimatise before doing anything strenuous… trust us on this one.

What Else Does AndesXtremo Offer?
AndesXtremo specialise in mountain biking, trekking, rock climbing, mountaineering as well as paragliding, but they also go beyond La Paz to Uyuni, Cochabamba, the Amazon and deep into the Andes, wanting to share the entire country with you!
We went Paragliding in Bolivia with Miguel and Diego and it’s one of the most memorable experiences in all of our travels! Definitely one of the best things to do in La Paz. They're the only APPI Certified pilots in the whole of La Paz, which reassured us they're up to international standards.
What we love is their ability to adapt to what you want to do, whether that's a focus on mountain biking, a tour of the whole country or learning to Paraglide, they’re ready to help you experience Bolivia’s adventurous side!
