Parrot Rock Mirissa: Complete Guide to Sri Lanka's Best Sunset Viewpoint

The south coast of Sri Lanka knows how to put on a sunset show. The dusty haze of burnt orange over the ocean lights up golden sands, palm trees and racing tuktuks. One of the best spots to watch the sunset in Sri Lanka is Parrot Rock in Mirissa, a popular coastal town.
We made our way to Parrot Rock twice, once in the morning stillness and the second for the spectacular sunset. Both times offered an adventure due to having to clamber over rocks to reach the sketchy staircase.
The first time, we didn’t know how deep the crossing actually got, so we now highly recommend visiting at low tide to avoid being soaked by waves up to your chest! Luckily, we managed to get across, and save our drone from the salt water by holding it over our head, but it was a close call.
If you manage to make it across to Parrot Rock, we did see a few people turn back, then you're awarded with one of the most beautiful views of Mirissa Beach, Secret Beach and Coconut Tree Hill.

Where Is Parrot Rock Mirissa?
Parrot Rock is found on Mirissa Beach and is one of the most popular things to do while you stay in the Sri Lankan coastal town. Just 15m from the shoreline is the wooden staircase that leads you up to the isolated island. But beware, the journey is not easy with sharp rocks and crashing waves!
How To Get To Parrot Rock Mirissa?
Mirissa is connected by Sri Lanka’s extensive public transport system, meaning you can get a bus or train to the town.
How to get to Parrot Rock Mirissa is straightforward. Once in Mirissa make your way to the main Mirissa Beach, it’s hard to miss Parrot Rock, which protrudes out of the water on the left hand side of the beach. We entered the beach about a 5-minute walk away.
Why Is It Called Parrot Rock?
It’s kind of a mystery to why the mini island is called Parrot Rock. Some people believe the shape of the rock looks like a parrot or parrot’s beak, we will let you decide that one, others believe parrots once lived there and local folklore says Parrot Rock is a guardian of the coast, although we don’t know what that has to do with the name.
We guess the mystery just adds to the charm of Parrot Rock.
We used our DJI Mini to take our drone photos, we love it as it’s under 500g and still captures the most beautiful pictures!
Our Experience Of Parrot Rock
The first time we visited Parrot Rock, we had got up early, wanting to beat the crowds and the heat.
This unfortunately meant we had arrived at high tide, making the crossing to the rock nearly impossible due to the slippery rocks and strong current. We waded through the waves, fully clothed, getting soaked up to our chests and holding our bags above our heads, although we could have been easily knocked down by a wave!
We looked silly, but we had made it to a bamboo staircase that looked like it was one large wave away from collapsing. Scrambling up, we made it to the deserted island.
There’s nothing here apart from a view, and a good one! You can see the sweeping Mirissa Beach, the picturesque Coconut Tree Hill, and look out into the endless Indian Ocean.
We wished we had brought our morning roti to enjoy on the island, but instead, after a bit of exploring, we headed back through the chest-height waves before heading to the bakery. I’m not sure what the lady behind the counter thought of our dripping clothes, but of course she was too polite to say anything.
We returned to Parrot Rock a second time at sunset. This is when the rock comes alive with people all wanting the best view. Usually we stay away from crowded attractions, but there’s something primal and exciting about gathering for a sunset, especially when you’re standing on an outcrop in the ocean!
Side note: Our friend Luke, the type of friend you should never leave alone, visited Parrot Rock solo, slipped on the wet rocks and cut up his legs pretty badly. Just a heads-up, wear proper shoes and be careful, especially if you're going alone. This is also where good travel insurance comes in handy. We use SafetyWing and recommend it for peace of mind!
The Best Time To Visit Parrot Rock Sri Lanka
As we’ve mentioned above, visit at low tide for an easier crossing, you can find the tide times for Mirissa here. It’s also easier to cross over to Parrot Island in the dry season, when the sea is calmer. Dry season runs from December to March.
We visited in November and we went at high tide, it was sketchy and we don’t recommend it, just ask Luke!
We also don’t suggest visiting after heavy rainfall, as the already questionable bamboo ladder becomes even more slippery.
If you want a less crowded experience, visiting in the morning means there are fewer people around. And if you’re an early bird, the sunrise light can be beautiful.
The most popular time to visit Parrot Rock is at sunset. Although it can get busy, the atmosphere is special and the views are spectacular!
What To Do On Parrot Rock?
There’s not much to do on Parrot Rock, we wished we’d brought our breakfast to have a makeshift picnic!
The views of the Indian ocean meeting Mirissa Beach are beautiful and it’s a great photography spot to snap a picture of Sri Lanka’s rugged coastline. It’s also a great drone spot, just make sure to follow the Sri Lankan Drone flying laws.
Snorkelling At Parrot Rock
We also feel like the secret of Parrot Rock is beneath the surface. Close by to the rock the snorkelling is incredible, smaller rocks are covered in coral and tropical fish dart in and out, we also spotted turtles nearby at Coconut Tree Hill, so you might be lucky and spot one here!
The water around Parrot Rock is relatively shallow, making it perfect for beginner snorkelers. The best snorkelling conditions are from November to April when the water is calmest and clearest. You can rent snorkelling gear from several shops along Mirissa Beach for around 500-1000 LKR per day or if you plan to snorkel lots on your trip, pack your own like we did! Just remember to be mindful of the coral - look but don't touch! The reef ecosystem here is delicate but absolutely stunning.
Parrot Rock Vs Coconut Tree Hill Viewpoint
Alongside Parrot Rock, Mirissa has another famous viewpoint, Coconut Tree Hill. We recommend you visit both during your time in Mirissa.
Coconut Tree Hill is easier to access, you don’t need to cross the sea and there’s no danger of sharp rocks, although we do love a bit of adventure! This also means you can visit Coconut Tree Hill Viewpoint at high tide.
Parrot Rock feels more rugged, with spiky wild bushes and dense undergrowth, in contrast to the neatly planted palm trees of Coconut Tree Hill, which are far more structured and picture-perfect.

How much is the entrance fee to Parrot Rock?
Parrot Rock is free! You don’t need to pay an entrance fee for Mirissa Beach or to walk to Parrot Rock.
Is Parrot Rock open 24/7?
Yes, Parrot Rock is a natural feature meaning you can visit for sunrise and sunset!
Can you climb Parrot Rock at high tide?
We don’t recommend climbing Parrot Rock at high tide. The journey over includes sharp rocks and strong currents. At high tide the water can come up to chest height.
Is it safe to visit Parrot Rock alone?
We don’t recommend you visit Parrot Rock completely alone, just glance around and check there’s people nearby before making the crossing! In fact we saw a lifeguard on watch when we visited.
How far is Parrot Rock from the shore?
Parrot Rock is only 15m from shore meaning it only takes a couple of minutes from Mirissa Beach.

We think Parrot Rock is one of the best things to do in Mirissa due to the beautiful views and adventure of getting to the island. Make sure you wear sturdy shoes, go at low tide and bring snacks to enjoy once you’re there! Also, don’t forget about snorkelling, you might even see a turtle!
