If you ask us, Hiriketiya Beach in Sri Lanka is the perfect place to base yourself as a digital nomad. In fact we loved Hiri so much we visited twice on our tuk tuk roadtrip around the island.
As digital nomads we know what you need for remote work, first and foremost GOOD WiFi but also a comfortable work space and a friendly community… oh, and plug sockets!
Hiriketiya is becoming more popular as a nomad community, although it still doesn’t have the status of neighbouring Weligama, we think it is the perfect place to balance work with a laid-back beach lifestyle.
Read on to find out our favourite co-working spaces and digital nomad-friendly cafés in Hiriketiya Beach.

Best Digital Nomad Cafés In Hiriketiya
Mond Café
Open: 8am - 5 pm
Instagram: @mond.hiriketiya
If you’re looking for a cosy setting with fast wifi, plug sockets and sea views then Mond Café is the place to head. They serve a variety of food including fresh bread, smoothie bowls and Malu Malu, a sailfish steak (although we didn’t get to try it here, Mike caught a sailfish in the Philippines and it was delicious).
Mond not only serves great flat whites but is part of a hotel that we’d love to stay in. The architects have used natural wood alongside exposed concrete to create a unique rustic space.

Malu Poke
Open: 8am - 9pm

If you’re looking for somewhere to grab breakfast and check your morning emails then Malu Poke has reliable internet and a relaxed vibe. Although this may not be the best place to set up for the whole day, for a quick, productive morning with delicious, healthy food Malu Poke is the place.
We recommend trying their smoothie bowls or the Katsu Curry which is absolutely delicious! It is also run but the loveliest group of staff, that are very hospitable.
Ice Hiriketiya
Open: 12:30pm - 5pm

Perhaps not the best place to get work done but definitely a good spot to meet like-minded travellers is Ice Hiriketiya. Often events are held, ice baths are had and yoga sessions calm the mind allowing you to relax from the work day.

Day passes to visit Verse Collective are around $6 a day, so if you’re looking for a place to balance work and fun head here!
Homebase Hiriketiya is a newer co-living space that seems to focus on the community of its guests and therefore we can’t see a day pass option.
However, if you do stay at Homebase Hiriketiya then you’ll join a close knit community of digital nomads and have access to the coworking space designed for productivity. Homebase often puts on curry nights, skill share sessions and workshops to enrich your time there and fundamentally help you make connections during your stay.

How To Get To Hiriketiya
Hiriketiya by Train
The closest train station to Hiriketiya is Dikwella, but many travellers choose to arrive via Matara or Weligama, where trains are more frequent. From Colombo, take the coastal railway line heading south toward Matara. The journey takes around 4 to 5 hours. From Matara, Hiriketiya is about 40 minutes away by tuk tuk or local bus.
Trains are incredibly affordable (£1-£3) and if you want the local experience, book second or third class to enjoy open doors and ocean views. When we caught the train, admittedly it was rush hour, we were packed in like sardines with locals tapping and singing away, an experience we’ll never forget!
Hiriketiya by Bus
Buses are the cheapest way to travel around Sri Lanka. From Colombo, take a Matara-bound bus, then at Matara Bus Station transfer to Dikwella bound local bus; they often go towards Tangalle or Hambantota. From Dikwella take a short tuk tuk ride or walk.
From Ella, you can catch a bus to Wellawaya, then transfer to Tangalle or Matara, and finally to Dikwella or book this private transfer.
Hiriketiya by Tuk Tuk
Tuk tuk rentals are popular and you’ll see loads of other tourists in their hired three-wheeled rides around Hiriketiya Beach. We hired ours from Tuk tuk Rental and had the best roadtrip of our lives, an experience we’d recommend to anyone!
