How Much We Spent On The Pan American Highway - May

May was incredible!

We started off on the floating Uros islands before making our way round Arequipa to the Q’eswachaka Bridge, which was a highlight of Peru.

Then we drove 7 hours to Puerto Maldonado and The Amazon Rainforest, here we enjoyed a stay at Sotupa Lodge exploring the flora and fauna. We visited during Friaje so the Amazon was cold... extremely weird.

Next up was the Ausangate mountain where we stayed in a mountain hut enjoying a roaring fire and warm hot chocolate.

A quick stop in Cusco before the sacred valley and Machu Picchu (we ended up on ana alternative Salkantay trek and this was wild, blog post coming soon!)

Currently we're in Nazca about to head North and towards Ecuador, next month is going to be expensive due to the miles we need to cover but first here's how much we spent in May.

May 2026: Budget Email

It's time for our May Pan American Highway budget round-up!

May has been an incredible month and we're on budget for once... Yesssss!

Peru has completely exceeded our expectations, and we've had some wild experiences along the way: exploring the Amazon, sleeping at 4,500m, trying guinea pig, and walking across a bridge made entirely of grass.

A big reason our costs are lower this month is that we've been partnering with some amazing Peruvian companies and driven so many less miles.

So keep that in mind when you see the numbers!

And honestly? Even without the partnerships, Peru is incredibly affordable. Here's the full May breakdown.

Our Journey So Far:

May Total: $1,309

Overall Total:$14,277 or £10,713

The activities in Peru have been a highlight, we loved the humming birds in the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu is a must!

To make Machu Picchu more affordable we walked from Hidroelectrica and skipped the bus opting for to walk up to the entrance as well, this saved loads of money on the train and meant we only had to pay for entrance which is quite reasonable.

Let's break May down...

May (Peru):

🛏️ Accommodation: $26 (A couple of nights in Cusco's campsite)

🍔 Food & Drink: $338

🚗 Petrol: $491

🚡Gifts for Home $27

Tip: We use Revolut to keep transaction costs low abroad and AMEX to book flights (we're slowly building back up our air miles after spending them on our flight to Santiago.)

Thanks for having a nose into how much we spend as we take on this epic expedition. If you'd life to support us we've set up a place where you can help fill Yoti's tank! Until next time, from somewhere along the Pan American Highway,
