Happy New Year!
We welcomed the new year in under Mount Fitz Roy with friends we'd made along the way! The perfect start to this year which we know is going to be incredible.
The start of this month was slow, we spent two weeks in El Chalten enjoying the slower pace of life and the commune as we called it. Then it all went a little south (literally)....
January 2026: Budget Email
It's time for our January Pan American Highway Budget round up!
This month was a little bit of a sh*t show. Let me explain. We had lined up a collaboration for our travel blog, super exciting and all confirmed. Kayaking with humpback whales đąđ an incredible opportunity. We committed to driving back 8 hours south (16hr detour altogether) and sadly it fell through. Frustrating, but we moved on and decided to drive up the east coast of Argentina where you can spot Orcas. This added on day's of driving, but worth it for the wildlife. We saw 0!Â
Not all months go to plan on the road, we've made no progress but we have an immense February to look forwards to, plus we stuck to the budget this month! Hooray, it was getting out of control!Â
Our Journey So Far:
2Country | 11,047kms | 14%PanAm | ARLocation |
January Total: $1,387
Overall Total: $7,387 or ÂŁ5,368
What a month! We've added over 3,000km to our total kms driven and added 0% on to the PanAm progress. We need to start making tracks north... not too quickly though as we're staring Bolivia's wet season in the face!Â
Let's break January down...
January (Chile/Argentina):Â
đď¸ Accommodation: $0 (No campsites again this month, we've been showering at the gas stations (YPF)!)
đ Food & Drink: $443 (Lots of coffees this month while we've been catching up on the blog!)
đ Petrol: $606 (We drove a lot! Over 3,000km this month)
đ Activities: $63 (Visiting Peninsula Valdes to try and see orcas)
đ°ď¸ Starlink Mini: $84 (Get one month free!)
đĄ Indicator fix: $47 (Our indicator needed re-wiring)
𧺠Laundry: $11
đĽ Camping Gas: $95 (This should last us 2 months)
𧟠Car wash: $22
đ Shopping: $3 (Magnet from Argentina)
đż Showers: $8 (We've also been making use of the rivers)
Last month I wrote 'New Year... new us' as we BLEW the budget. This month I think we've done well, sticking to our budget of £1k a month ($1,376), we only went $11 over. In February we head up Argentina following the famous Ruta 40 and tackle The Puna, a high altiplano track that tests even the best vehicles. Wish us luck!
Until next time, from somewhere along the Pan American Highway,
K & M xÂ
