Sri Lanka is small but mighty and packs a punch when adventure is concerned. We spent 2 months exploring the island to find you the most exhilarating, hidden and exciting experiences to add to your Sri Lanka Bucket List.

Whether you want to challenge yourself with a rope jump across the face of a waterfall, hike in the Knuckles mountain range, raft down Kitugala’s rapids, experience a seaplane, drive your own tuk tuk past wild elephants, or take to the skies in a hot air balloon over ancient ruins we have it all.

Once an underrated destination, the island is quickly making a name for itself as one of Asia’s top spots.

19 Adventurous Things To Do In Sri Lanka

If we had to recommend just one adventurous thing to do in Sri Lanka, this would be it. Driving our own tuk tuk completely transformed our trip. It gave us the freedom to explore remote corners of the island, connect with locals in a real way, and turn every travel day into an adventure.

We cruised along palm-fringed coastal roads, spotted wild elephants on jungle tracks, and even strapped surfboards to the roof. Oh, and best of all, it gave us access to all the epic experiences in this list!

  1. Marvel Sri Lanka Rope Jumping

The Marvel Sri Lanka is a gold mine of adrenaline pumping activities. Our favourite one from the list is Rope Jumping at Lakshapana Waterfall. Free fall through the air, feel the mist of the falls and take in the views while swinging high above the ground.

Kitulgala is one of the best places in Sri Lanka to experience fast, white water rapids as well as the beauty of the surrounding jungle. The experience of gently floating down a lush, vibrant river before being violently thrown around by rapids is sure to get the adrenaline pumping and faces smiling.

We booked our rafting tour through the Marvel and they also recommended an eco lodge for us to stay in beforehand. This was an open air room based on the banks of the river and we even took a local raft in the morning back to the main road. An experience we’ll never forget, having to clamber on a raft with no sides with our huge backpacks and floating down a mist shrouded river.

One of the most popular places for scuba diving in Sri Lanka is Trincomalee due to the plentiful underwater world near Pigeon Island. Strap on your tanks and explore vibrant coral reefs with reef sharks, turtles and tropical fish. The corals here are protected by the Pigeon Island Nature Reserve and are still recovering after the 2004 Tsunami.

Trincomalee is also a great place to learn to scuba dive with PADI courses offered in some of the dive schools.

  1. Crocodile Self-Safari

This one is a little bit of a side quest. If you’re near Arugam Bay or Hambantota you can see huge, wild crocodiles from the side of the road. Head to Crocodile Bridge or Crocodile viewing platform and come face to face with 10 foot sun bathing crocodiles… just don’t get too close.

Surprisingly, the crocodiles ended up being one of our favourite animal encounters.

We never imagined we’d get to take a tiny private plane across Sri Lanka but we found ourselves in the air looking over the green land below. That was after taking off from a lake! Cinnamon Air has Sri Lanka’s only sea planes and with different aerodromes located across the whole country, this has to be one of the best ways to travel!

Yes, this is expensive, but for a honeymoon or treat the feeling of taking off from water is like no other. We took the plane from Koggala Lake to Colombo but were recommended the landing in Castlereigh Reservoir for the best views.

There’s no better way to experience Sri Lanka’s surf scene than by joining a surf camp. We stayed at The Surfer in Weligama for five days and loved every minute.

Whether you’re a total beginner or already catching green waves, camps like this cater to all levels. The daily lessons helped us build confidence, improve our technique, and properly get into the rhythm of surf life.

Sri Lanka is one of the top surf destinations in Asia, so if you’ve ever thought about learning, this is your sign. Chill vibes, warm water, and consistent waves make it the perfect place to start.

If you plan to visit Mirissa (from Dec -Apr) or Trincomalee (May-Sep) then you’re in prime whale season. Sri Lanka’s waters are home to a variety of whale species including blue whales, fin whales, pilot whales and sometimes even orcas.

In Mirissa, we joined Raja and The Whales for a morning boat trip. We spent 6 hours on the Indian Ocean and kept our eyes peeled. We saw a fin whale, which is the second largest whale in the world and a pod of hundreds of spinner dolphins. Sadly, we didn’t see a blue whale, but that just gives us an excuse to return.

  1. Sky Diving

Does skydiving appear on every bucket list? Probably. Is it a bit of a cliché? Maybe. But how often do you get to free-fall over tropical coastline and land right on the beach?

Skydiving in Sri Lanka is offered near Koggala on the south coast, where you’ll jump from 15,000 feet with sweeping views of the Indian Ocean, golden beaches, and jungle inland.

A little less adrenaline filled, but still taking to the sky, why not take a hot air balloon in Sigiriya. Float effortlessly above the ancient fortress, spot elephants far below and marvel at green paddy fields.

One of the wildest encounters we’ve ever had (pun intended) was driving past huge elephants in our tiny tuktuk. The B35 cuts right through Yala National Park, meaning you can drive through one of Sri Lanka’s top safari zones without joining a tour or paying park fees.

We did the drive twice and both times came face to face with massive bull elephants on the road. It was equal parts terrifying and unforgettable.

This stretch of road has even featured in BBC wildlife documentaries - you’re basically driving through a David Attenborough scene…How cool!

  1. Delft Island (Jaffna)

Delft Island, off the coast of Jaffna, feels like a different world entirely: windswept, remote, and dotted with wild horses roaming freely. You can even take your tuk tuk over on a wooden raft, which is an adventure in itself.

Once there, explore crumbling colonial ruins, coral walls, and endless open landscapes that feel totally untouched by tourism.

  1. Kitesurfing In Kalpitiya

If you’re into kitesurfing (or fancy giving it a go), Sri Lanka’s got you covered. The east coast spots like Kalpitiya and Mannar have steady winds and warm water that make for epic sessions.

Whether you’re a total newbie or already shredding waves, you’ll find everything from flat lagoons to open ocean playgrounds. Plus, nothing beats wrapping up your day with a sunset over the water.

A pilgrimage of 5,500 steps. Adam’s Peak is a hike with a difference. The entire trail is paved with a staircase, and in December, hundreds of monks make the journey up to the summit, where they believe Adam first set foot on Earth.

If you take on this challenge, we have one bit of advice: wait for good weather. We climbed through a rainstorm, meaning we were freezing, had no views and were pounded by wind at the top… we still loved it though as we’re suckers for type 2 fun!

  1. Paragliding in Ella or Kandy

We didn’t actually try paragliding in Ella ourselves but watching people run off the side of a mountain and soar over the tea fields made us seriously tempted. It’s got to be one of the most scenic spots in the country to give it a go, with views over Ella Gap, Little Adam’s Peak and endless hills.

  1. Motorbikes Nuwara Eliya

Hit the road with a motorcycle tour around Nuwara Eliya. When we visited Little England (Nuwara Eliya) we found out about motorbike excursions. We met a group in our favourite restaurant there who had spent the last few days driving misty valleys, sweeping curves, and discovering waterfalls hiding just around the bend.

You can do day trips around the highlands or even sign up for epic week-long tours that take you all across the country. If tuk tuks aren’t your thing, this might just be the ultimate way to see Sri Lanka.

Camping in Gal Oya is the kind of experience that feels like a well-kept secret. This off-the-beaten-path national park is known for its wild, untouched beauty, think jungle sounds at night, misty mornings by the lake, and the chance to spot elephants swimming between islands. You can stay in rustic safari camps or eco-lodges that bring you as close to nature as it gets. It’s remote, raw, and ridiculously peaceful.

Trekking in the Knuckles Mountain Range of Sri Lanka offers a breathtaking adventure through cloud-covered peaks, stunning tea plantations, and the anticipation of trekking in an environment the leopard calls home.

Unlike the tourist-packed trails of Adam's Peak, Little Adam's Peak, and Ella's Rock, the Knuckles Mountain Range is rarely visited by tourists. The range includes the Knuckles Forest Reserve which is an UNESCO World Heritage site that delivers amazing hikes in central Sri Lanka.
